O Yft : x6r VOLUiVIE XNUMBER 87. . WILMINGTON N. C, THURSDAY MORNING OCTOBER 4, 1855. . WHOLE NUMBER T 37 'A it JJT r r AilSSUlSi-LANY. ANTIdUl TIES FROM NINEVEH. X correspondont of the Journal of Commerce writes from Beirut that a few dars breviouslv aletter was received from nn Intelligent missionary in Mosul, who still loves America and he institutions,; Containing, besides other matters the. in formation that he had filled fifty boxes with, choice antiquities of Nineveh, vhich were to be montited on the hacks f camels and thus transported to Scan tleroon, and thence be shipped to Beirut, ironv whence they can be easily and theapty forwarded to Boston either this summer or in the autumn. The fifty boxes of nntiquitiea are to be distributed among several New England colleges. The massive gate of Nineveh and other monuments obtained by Mr. Place, the French Cousul, had all safely reach ed Bassora, the port on the Persian Gulf from whence they "were to be shipped "lo Harvre.- The day on which they were put on board the rafts at Mosul -was made a holyday by the inhabitants, and the whole city turned out to behold the sight and render auy necessary as sistance.' - A letter from Mosul states that the 'excavations ' at Korsabad and NImround .had been discontinued and will not" be resumed. All the French and English scientific explorers had left the country. ' The writer says that Dr. Duff of 'Calcutta, had spent a few days at Bei ruu His health hd received consider able benefit from "his last winter's so journ in the south of France, and still more from bis stay. under the hot skies of Syria. . ' ; . . ' '"'', The , commerce of Beirut . has been large beyond precedent the past season. Steamers and large vessels have always been in port for Constantinople, to be freighted with wheat and barley for the seat of war. Prices ofc provisions were high at Beirut, but fruits were abundant and low half a dozen - pounds of deli cious - grapes cau be ' bought for two cents, and as many -figs from the trees for three cents." ' Within a few years the potato has been! cultivated in the is land of Cyprus; they grow'to a good size there, and are fair and sound. , The price at present is but forty cents a bush el;: V'.V" g:;.;--: ; ; ;- The American missions in Syria aie ssaid to be in quite a prosperous condi tion. Au excellent seminary has been ,esta Wished at 'Mount Lebanon, where young men of talents, particularly such as give evidence of piety, are instructed for the ministry. ' Several of. the native students were spending the vacation at Beirut. '.' . , - "... .." ,, TROOF THAT THE MOON . IS NOT IXHABI--. TED. . 'Dr. Scoresby, in an account that he has given of some recent observations made with the Earl of Rosse's telescope,, says: "With respect to the moon, eve ry object on its Surface of 100 feet was now distinctly to be seen; and he had no doubt, that, under very favorable circumstance, it would be so with ob jects 60 feet in height. On its surface ivere craters of extinct volcanoes, rocks and masses of stones almost innumera ble. He had no doubt that if such a building as he was then in .were upon the surface of the moon, it would be ren dered distinctly visiblrt by these instru ments. But there were no signs of hab itations such as ours -no; vestive of ar chitecture remain to. show that the moon as or ever was inhaiited by a race of mortals similar to ourselves. Jt presen ted no appearance which could lead to the supposition that it contained any thing like, the green helds and lovely verdure of this beautiful world of ours. There was no water visible not a sea or a river, or even the measure of a re servoir for supplying town or factory all seemed desolate." RATHER REMARKABLE, .." During the recent trial of McDonald, for murder, in Hampshire county, it was observed that there were three wit nesses between whom there was so close a resemblance as to render it diffi cult to distinguish one from the other. On inquiry, it turned out that they were brothers, and all came into the world 'at the same time. ! - ' SINGULAR CASE OF DEATH. Mr-Joseph Carr, well known as a keeper of several eating houses in Bos - ton, died at his residence in this city, this morning at .5 o'c'ock. Sdme six weeks since, Mr. Carr complained that a corn upon, one of his feet , gave him great pain. - Upon: making known his complaint, a gentleman recommended Mr. C. to put a clam-skjn upon the corn which he said was a sure cure. Mr, C. followed the direction, since - "! j pam sPread entirely over his body, and it is thonght by his friends to have been the canse of his death. Boston Traveller, 26A. ; PROSTIWHOnIFn. YORK. 1 A gentleman in New York named Gould, who has been for some years in vestigating the cans- s and progress of crime in that city, from motives of prac tical philantropy, has ascertained that there are now living in that city no less - than twenty-four thousand unfortunate or abandoned women, and no fewer , 'than fourteen hundred - houses of ill- fame. This is truly a frightful pro . portion of the entire population of New 'sYork. . - ' A DRAWING ROOM TEST. You can generally tell how popular you are with a lady, by the length of time she keeps you waiting whilst dres sing ta receive you. Gov. Slade of Vermont was in Buf falo on Wednesday, accompanied by between 30 and 40 ladie"s, all of whom are bound to the western country as teachers. : ' N t TOBACCO CROP. We hear, says the South-Side (Va,) Democrat, numerous complaints of the ravages which the horn bug is making on'the tobacco crop." In Dinwiddie and Prince Edward the crops are said to ba very much injured, rhe amount of to hocco raised in that section wil Knot, we presume, be as large as was expected. A Buffalo Chief, the head man of the Chippewa nation, died lately ilK the Lake Superior region, at the advauced age of 100 years. He is said to have, been noted for his rare integrity, wis dom in council, power as an orator, and magnanimity as a wartidK His funer al pageant was attended by a large con course of Indians.
